On July 16, the second meeting of Yokohama Frontier Toastmasters Club (YFTMC) was held at Kanagawa Roudou Plaza (L-Plaza). This was the very first English meeting of our Club. There were some 16 attendees, including three non-Toastmaster guests (those who do not belong to any Toastmasters Clubs yet). The meeting was held in a luxurious-looking room (it is not actually very expensive as we use public facility ) with big chairs.
The highlight of the meeting was that we welcomed TM Azuma from Yamato Bilingual Toastmasters Club, who went all the way to win the annual Speech Contest of all-Japan in May. Representing Japan, he will compete at the inter-country speech contest (we call it inter-District contest) in Calgary, Canada in August.
Besides TM Azuma, there were three other notable speakers. Two of them made their speeches in English for the first time in their life, yet they made wonderful jobs. The first speaker, TM K.E., talked about transitions in her relationship with her brother, and the second speaker, TM H.W., shared his experience of having his wallet stolen in Milan. The third speaker, TM M.H., a very experienced speaker, spoke about her young experience about rain when she did not speak English as fluently as she is now. All the four speakers were given positive feedback and suggested room for improvement by the individual evaluators. I skip writing about the contents of TM Azuma’s speech as the inter-District contest has not ended yet, but I can say that he made a great head-start, especially compared to last year of this time when he was also the all-Japan representative.
Table topics (impromptu speech session), moderated by TM N.W., became a good opportunity for the participants to know one another as the questions were on one’s favorites, such as color, food etc.
At the end of the meeting, TM K.E. and TM N.W., who were originally from other Clubs, declared to join our Club in addition to their home Clubs! The other guests, including those who came here for the first time, expressed their willingness to return to our upcoming meetings.
We had an optional dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Yokohama after the meeting. During the dinner, we held a session for everyone to give their own feedback to TM Azuma for the inter-District Contest. Overall, the meeting was a very fruitful one with a lot of laughter, applause and educational value.
